'Transitions XII' - Unique Abstract Monoprint

A bright, colourful, unique handmade framed abstract monoprint. This is from an ongoing series of studio work focused on exploring shapes and colours in handmade printmaking.  

My abstract monoprints emerge from intense studios sessions, each starting with an idea and vision of shapes, patterns and colours working together, then allowing intuition during the process to keep building, layering and harmonising towards a final composition. 

Each one I show to the world has passed my test – it must immediately draw the eye then keep making me come back to study and enjoy it, showing me something different each time I see it.  

Each one is unique, not just as a final print but as a record of an idea, a moment and a process of making.

Monoprinting is somewhere between printing and painting. It is printmaking because the ink is applied to a plate and then transferred to paper in a printing press, rather than being applied directly to paper. However it is similar to painting because the plate is typically just a flat surface (e.g. a sheet of perspex) and ink is painted on to it with a brush or roller. The image can be built up in many layers and it is easy to use stencils, templates or masks to apply colour only where you want it. This more painterly approach generally means monoprints are all unique, they cannot be identically repeated, they are not editioned, and are numbered 1 of 1 (i.e. an edition of 1).
