'Energise I' - Unique Abstract Monoprint
'Energise I' - Unique Abstract Monoprint
''Energise I' is perhaps my most expressive and energetic monoprint to date. Often I tend to prefer smooth flowing shapes and cut masks and stencils to achieve this when adding new layers.
This print was more frenetic - pieces were ripped from news sheet without too much planning then arranged on each layer quickly and intuitively. Allowing the process and the subconscious to dictate the outcome can be difficult, its a case of letting go of the analytical part of the mind and it often goes wrong, but in this case I ended up with a print full of energy and excitement. The more I look at it the more I see shapes, maybe figures, dancing without a care in the world. If you want a print that is calm and relaxing, look elsewhere, but if you want to share in the excitement, maybe take a closer look!

Monoprinting is somewhere between printing and painting. It is printmaking because the ink is applied to a plate and then transferred to paper in a printing press, rather than being applied directly to paper. However it is similar to painting because the plate is typically just a flat surface (e.g. a sheet of perspex) and ink is painted on to it with a brush or roller. The image can be built up in many layers and it is easy to use stencils, templates or masks to apply colour only where you want it. This more painterly approach generally means monoprints are all unique, they cannot be identically repeated, they are not editioned, and are numbered 1 of 1 (i.e. an edition of 1).
