These unique handmade monoprints are from an ongoing series of work titled ‘Digital Visions’. The work is inspired by the writings of Paul Virilio and the speed, filtering and manipulation of information and images when viewed through our screens, or the reality that we increasingly experience the world through screens and devices. What we actually see is a ‘random’ selection of second-hand views of the world.
Interpreting these ideas in the prints, the tile patterns are generated by a random number matrix then cut into printing plates. These are either used to partially obscure an abstract print, or are used to build up an image in layers of random patterns.
I have then developed the series with grid formats and partial layers to create unique exciting works of pattern and colour with a story to make us think and reflect.

Monoprinting is somewhere between printing and painting. It is printmaking because the ink is applied to a plate and then transferred to paper in a printing press, rather than being applied directly to paper. However it is similar to painting because the plate is typically just a flat surface (e.g. a sheet of perspex) and ink is painted on to it with a brush or roller. The image can be built up in many layers and it is easy to use stencils, templates or masks to apply colour only where you want it. This more painterly approach generally means monoprints are all unique, they cannot be identically repeated, they are not editioned, and are numbered 1 of 1 (i.e. an edition of 1).
