This work responds to the proposed investment in roadbuilding announced in the UK Government's March 2020 budget. This included new investment of £27bn in road building, including work on 4,000 miles of roads. This has been criticised for the potential to increase emissions and make achieving net-zero targets by 2050 more difficult.
The original work comprises 18 circular collagraph prints arranged in 9 sets of 2 (each containing one large and one smaller print. The bottom right set represents the 4,000 miles of roads affected by the new investment referred to above. The remaining 8 sets of prints represent the 32,000 miles of the existing UK major road network. This presents the scale of the proposed investment in context. The patterns in the prints are inspired by satellite views of roads, roundabouts and junctions.
I created the original work for the 2020/21 Scott Creative Arts Foundation Emerging Artist Award (for which I was finalist).
